Kotoko Fujioka (née Katayama) was Haruhi Fujioka's mother, who died while her daughter was approximately five years old, based upon Haruhi's remark at the beginning of the series that ten years had passed since Kotoko's death. It is known that she was a fine attorney who remains a role model for her daughter, Haruhi, who takes after her in several ways.
Kotoko is said to have been very intelligent, sweet and caring and that she wished nothing but the best for her family. She was also said to be a good cook. Kotoko is an alumni of St. Lobelia's and was quite popular at her law school, as shown in Volume 15-16 of the manga.
Kotoko met Ryouji while he was working as a bartender, and he provided the winning testimony in her first court case. He fell in love after witnessing her talent as a lawyer. At first, she found him to be annoying, but their relationship developed when Ryouji saved her from an enraged person in a public park. They began dating when she was 25 and he was 19. Their wedding was described as a "shotgun wedding" and many friends and family members disapproved of their romance.
When alive, Kotoko was an law attorney. If the way Haruhi recalls her both in waking memory and in a dream is accurate, she was a dedicated and loving mother. One would assume she was also somewhat open-minded as she accepted Ryouji's career choice and sexual orientation.
- According to the live action series, she died of illness.
- Ryouji also reveals that Kotoko was a closet fan of the St. Lobelia's Zuka Club during her school days.
- She was skilled in karate as self-defense.
- She was exactly 6 years older than her husband.
